Dome House

The Cape Romano Dome House is gone!
Hurricane Ian destroyed the iconic abandoned home on Sept 28, 2022

The Cape Romano Dome Home Tour is no longer available.

Hurricane Ian destroyed the Cape Romano Dome HouseOn September 28th, 2022, Hurricane Ian passed offshore Marco Island as it headed towards Cayo Costa north of Ft. Myers. Ian’s 155mph sustained winds and 10 to 15 feet of storm surge were too much for the iconic abandoned home to withstand.

As a result, the concrete domes fell off their concrete pilings into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The story of the
Cape Romano Dome House

The crazy Dome Home

Cape Romano dome house near Marco IslandThe Cape Romano Dome House is world-renowned for being one of the strangest attractions. Once on land, the Dome House slowly was infringed upon by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. For many years it sat abandoned on the beach. Then, gradually it became about 200 feet or more from shore! This is truly one of the strangest things ever seen. The Dome Home should have been on your bucket list while visiting Marco Island!

What happened to the Dome Home?

Maybe you’ve seen the Dome Home on the Travel Channel? Have you seen it showcased on TV shows such as Mysteries of the Abandoned? Locals of Marco Island have seen the Dome House change over the past 40 years. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico have slowly but drastically changed the shoreline of Cape Romano.

You always needed a boat to see the Dome House

You missed your chance to see the Dome House above the water! As the Domes are no longer above the water and crashing waves, it is tough to see. It would be best if you had a diving mask and fins to see the Dome House. Unfortunately, you cannot walk or drive there – you must have a boat to get there! The Dome House stands off the shore of Cape Romano. Cape Romano is on a barrier island south of Marco Island.

Boat tour to Cape Romano Dome Home

Back before hurricanes eroded the beach under the dome houseFlorida Island Tours’ Cape Romano Dome House boat tour was the most popular tour from Marco Islands. For years our boat left from Caxambas Boat Park on Marco Island and brought guests on an entertaining and informative one-hour boat tour. Our boat tours are led by a Coast Guard certified Master Captain navigating the approximately 10 miles to the south through the Ten Thousand Islands to where the Dome Home was located at Cape Romano.

Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife

The 10,000 Islands National wildlife refuge is a safe haven for many species of wildlife. As a result, tour guests often saw lots of wildlife! Sightings included dolphins, birds, manatees, and sea turtles.
